It is, most people will admit, startling enough to be suddenly confronted in the dark of one’s own private grounds by a masked man and, coincidently, to have the muzzle of a revolver thrust between one’s eyes, but that is as nothing compared with what followed. “Lift your voice, utter a sound, make a move other than I direct and you are a dead man!”—was flung at me in a fierce, hoarse whisper.
